All Roads Lead to China

While growth in the global pharmaceutical market remains anemic, rising just six to seven percent in 2006, emerging economies are galloping ahead to outpace growth in mature markets like the United States and major European nations. Pharmaceutical companies are finding bright spots outside of these traditional markets to compensate for increasingly flat global growth. Within the last five years, the emerging markets’ share of growth in the global pharmaceutical market has grown from 5 percent to 31 percent. The most stellar opportunity lies in China, which continues to emerge as a significant healthcare market. To look at growth in China is to see that all roads lead to this awakening giant that will dominate as the world’s largest economy by 2040. IMS Global Consulting’s Raymond Hill, Stephen Walter and Mandy Chui explore these dynamics.

Canadian Researchers find drug-coated stents help to reduce the need for repeat cardiac surgeries …

Canadian Researchers find drug-coated stents help to reduce the need for repeat cardiac surgeries and don’t significantly increase the rate of death or risk of heart attack. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that seeks to clear up the confusion about the safety of the expensive devices. This latest study, conducted at ICES in collaboration with researchers from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto, looked at more than 7,500 patients, half of whom received drug-eluting stents while the other half received conventional bare metal stents, between December 2003 and March 2005.

Cyplasin-SC TM Kills Melanoma Cells, Even Derived From Different Patients but Leaves Normal Human Cells Unharmed

Edmonton—It is well known that many cancer types – or even the same cancer in different patients – show different sensitivities to a given therapeutic treatment. In earlier studies Cyplasin-SCTM has shown to be an efficient killer of many cancer cell types whereas normal human cells were left intact. An independent third party study conducted by Professor di Liegro, Department of Medicine of the University of Palermo, Italy, tested Cyplasin-SCTM on 5 melanoma cell lines derived from 5 different patients to determine if all melanoma cells were equally susceptible to Cyplasin-SCTM or if there were specific melanomas that did not respond to the drug. As a control to these experiments normal human cells were also exposed to the same concentrations of Cyplasin-SCTM used for the melanoma experiments.

Alberta’s Green Technology to Help Meet China’s Power Needs

Alberta’s success in producing bioenergy from agricultural waste could soon turn an operational cost and environmental problem for Chinese farmers into a source of self-sufficient electricity and new revenue. The IMUS™ biogas system, originally developed by the Alberta Research Council, Highmark Renewables and its partners, is being adapted for small-scale use in the Chinese market with help from the Alberta government.

Construction and testing of the Chinese demonstration plant will take about two years and start this fall. Upon completion, the plant will annually process about 3,000 tonnes of dairy manure as the main feedstock and generate excess electricity equivalent to the needs of about 150 Alberta homes. Based on this plant’s success, future IMUS™ plants may be built in China, creating a business opportunity for Alberta industry and laying the groundwork to adapt the technology for the average Alberta farmer.

Bayer Stops Sales of Trasylol Globally based on Canadian Findings

WASHINGTON_Under government pressure, Bayer AG said Monday it halted worldwide sales of its antibleeding drug Trasylol after a Canadian clinical study found it could be linked to a higher risk of death than other drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration asked the company to stop selling the drug, used to prevent excessive bleeding during heart bypass surgery, pending detailed review of preliminary results from the Canadian study. The study comparing the safety and efficacy of the drug with two others was recently halted.

Bayer, based in Leverkusen, Germany, said it made the decision to suspend sales after talks with FDA, the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medicine Products along with Health Canada.

Trasylol, also known as aprotinin, works by blocking enzymes that dissolve blood clots. It is designed to stem blood loss and enable patients receiving heart bypass surgery to avoid transfusions. Bayer estimates worldwide sales of the injection drug were roughly $135 million for the nine months through September. The U.S. accounted for about $91 million of that total.

The Canadian study comparing the safety and efficacy of Trasylol with two other drugs was recently halted. Preliminary results
from the study suggested Trasylol increased the risk of death when compared with the other drugs. The trial was to include 3,000 patients.

Google to launch online health platform early next year

Google plans to formally launch its long-awaited health platform in early 2008, said Marissa Mayer, Google’s head of search, earlier this month at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Mayer said that Google has developed an online health platform prototype that includes: Personal health records, healthcare-related search functions, diet and exercise regimens, and a localized “find a doctor” application.

“Google is not a doctor, but people come to us with a lot of health information searches,” Mayer said, adding, “There is a big user information need, which we should ultimately fill.” Some parts of Google’s health platform will be available at no cost, but the services and applications might be subscription-based, Mayer said.
