$40 million National Institute Nanotechnology Innovation Centre is open for business
The National Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation Centre located on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Alberta, opened its doors in October. The 15,000 square metre, $40 million institute is one of the world's most technologically advanced research facilities with the latest generation of scientific equipment, including electron and scanning probe microscopes and chemical and material analysis instruments.
The research facility houses the quietest laboratory space in Canada, with ultra-low vibration and minimal acoustical noise or electro-magnetic interference lab space critical to nano-scale research. The facility also includes specialized laboratories in chemical and biochemical synthesis and analysis of the material structure at the atomic scale, as well as a Class 1000 Clean Room for the production of nanostructured systems.
Established in 2001, the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) is an integrated, multi-disciplinary institution involving researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy and medicine. The NINT's research focuses on the integration of nano-scale devices and materials into complex nanosystems that are connected to the outside world. The long-term objective is to discover "design rules" for nanotechnology and develop platforms for building nanosystems and materials that can be constructed and programmed for a particular application.
NINT is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and the University of Alberta and is operated as a partnership between the National Research Council and the University.
